How to Play Klondike Solitaire
The goal of Klondike Solitaire is to move every card, sorted by suit from Ace to King, onto the four foundation piles. Here's how a game unfolds from the opening deal to a win:
- The deal. 28 cards are dealt into seven tableau columns. Column 1 gets one card, column 2 gets two, and so on up to column 7 with seven cards. Only the last card in each column starts face up.
- Build the tableau. Move face-up cards to build descending sequences that alternate color, for example a red 8 onto a black 9. Drag a whole face-up run at once to move it as a group.
- Fill empty columns. Only a King, or a valid run starting with a King, can be placed into an empty tableau column.
- Draw from the stock. When you have no useful moves, click or tap the stock pile to flip cards into the waste pile, one at a time in Draw 1 mode or three at a time in Draw 3 mode. Only the top card of the waste pile is playable.
- Recycle the stock. Once the stock is empty, click it again to flip the waste pile back into the stock and keep drawing.
- Build the foundations. Move Aces up to the foundations as they appear, then continue each suit in order: A, 2, 3, and so on up to King.
- Win the game. You win as soon as all 52 cards are sorted onto the four foundations.
Foundation, Tableau, and Stock Rules at a Glance
- Foundations build up by suit, starting with the Ace and ending with the King.
